What is Assertiveness?
Often, assertiveness can be confused with aggressiveness. However, to the contrary, assertiveness training teaches confidence, not aggression. Assertiveness can be viewed as the middle point between passiveness and aggressiveness. It’s important for individuals to strike a balance between the two, as assertiveness allows individuals to voice their thoughts and opinions in a manner that is respectful of others and opposing views.
Why Do You Need Assertiveness Training?
If you are too passive in how you communicate with others, you might be hesitant to express your thoughts, for fear of unfair treatment or criticism. This fear and lack of confidence can, unfortunately, lead to feelings of stress, depression and anxiety if not addressed in a constructive manner. The opposite of passiveness, being too aggressive in your communication, can create unnecessary conflict between you and others. Through assertiveness training, Chapin & Russell Associates teaches you how to stand up for your rights and promote your needs without violating the rights of others. By teaching assertiveness, we see our clients properly communicate with loved ones, have their voices heard, and continue to be thoughtful of the opinions of others.
How Can We Help?
Chapin & Russell Associates’ team consists of counselors with education and experience with assertiveness training. Our mental health professionals teach clients the most effective techniques for asserting themselves and managing the stress and anxiety that can stem from a lack of confidence.
- We begin by assessing the interpersonal situations in which our clients have the most difficulty asserting themselves.
- Counselors help identify the underlying beliefs and attitudes that have led a client to be too passive or aggressive.
- Through role-playing exercises, tests, etc., we teach clients when and where assertiveness can be helpful.
- Once our clients understand the benefits of assertiveness, we teach various techniques that help them assert themselves in real-life scenarios.
- Our counselors then provide ongoing guidance and support for the changes being made by those whose interpersonal concerns strongly link to feelings of anxiety, depression, etc.
